Cortical Development: The Sources of Spontaneous Patterned Activity
نویسنده
چکیده
A recent study has found that spontaneous neural activity in the developing visual cortex has two distinct origins - local intracortical circuits and spontaneous activity in the retina.

Responses of primary somatosensory cortical neurons to controlled mechanical stimulation.
The results of psychophysical studies suggest that displacement velocity may contribute significantly to the sensation of subcortical somatosensory neurons. The cortical correlates of these phenomena, however, are not known. In the present study the responses of rapidly adapting (RA) neurons in the forelimb region of cat primary somatosensory cortex (SI) to controlled displacement of skin and h...

In studies of the developing mammalian visual system, it has been axiomatic that visual experience begins with eye-opening. Any role for neuronal activity earlier in development has been attributed to the patterned spontaneous activity found in retina and lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). Here we show that, as early as 2 wk before eye-opening, visual stimuli presented through the closed eyelids...
متن کاملCortical development: A role for spontaneous activity?
Patterned spontaneous activity seems important in the development of the retina and its projections, and it has now been shown that early retinal activity is faithfully transmitted through the thalamus. The modular organization of the visual cortex is also dependent on activity but not necessarily that originating in the retina.
متن کاملRewiring cortex: the role of patterned activity in development and plasticity of neocortical circuits.
Visually driven activity is not required for the establishment of ocular dominance columns, orientation columns, and long-range horizontal connections in visual cortex, although spontaneous activity appears to be necessary. The role of activity may be instructive or simply permissive; evidence for an instructive role requires inquiry into the role of the pattern of activity in shaping cortical ...
متن کاملTraveling slow waves of neural activity: a novel form of network activity in developing neocortex.
Spontaneous neuronal firing during development has the potential to shape many aspects of neuronal wiring throughout the brain. Bursts of electrical activity coordinated among large numbers of neurons, occurring during a brief developmental window, have been described in many regions of the CNS, including retina, hippocampus, and spinal cord, but evidence for this type of activity in developing...
